It is critical that teachers implement Fair Use policies when preparing classroom materials. Violation of copyright law could result in fines for the teacher, school, and/or district.
Fair Use guidelines are as follows:
- Purpose: the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes.
- Amount: the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole.
- Type: the nature of the copyrighted work.
- Value: the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
